SID: Hi Fran and Romi, so first thing first, who is and what is 'Adora'?
Adora: Adora is made up of us: Fran Sylver and Romi Alter. We like to define ourselves as a glam rock duo; not because that’s solely what we devote our music to, but rather because we think that glam encompasses a wide range of opportunities that we are keen to explore. Glam is not only about the music, but the context that carries it, and the image that the artist portrays with their sound, style and charisma. We are very much inspired by artists like David Bowie, who have taken their creative vision way beyond their music. So yeah, Adora is a glam rock duo, even though we are happy to explore different genres of music, through the mode of expression that we interpret as glam.
SID: That’s great, and you both look extremely cool and fashionable, what would you name as your top 5 artistic influences on music and personal style?
Adora: As mentioned, Bowie ranks top five. So does Queen and Talking Heads. We also appreciate a lot of pop music, and we specifically love the creative vision and work ethic of artists like Dua Lipa and Madonna. All of them inspire our fashion sense very much as well, especially when it comes to picking outfits to perform in!
SID: What are some of your up-and-coming peers that you think the world should know about?
Adora: Not necessarily up-and-coming, but certainly niche is Kaho Nakamura. She’s a japanese artist whom we recently discovered through a friend and she is absolutely incredible. We think such people should have way more recognition for what they do. We also love an Aussie duo called Wigz - they’re both really cool and they are killing it online. They also have an incredible aesthetic. We love to see great female artists doing what they know best!
SID: Any music/films you’ve heard/seen recently that have stuck with you?
Adora: In terms of music, we are currently loving Måneskin just like everyone else - again love their aesthetic, we can very much relate to their creative vision in many ways. Aside from that, we also love Remi Wolf’s music, and her latest single Liz is amazing!
SID: As you both write your own music, do you have any specific rituals when preparing for writing a song?
Adora: We try to write on a daily basis, so we wouldn’t say we have any rituals based around it. We do have a process that we tend to follow for writing music, even though it varies sometimes. But we usually write the music first, and then have a think about what those sounds inspire for us in terms of lyrics. Once we nail down an interesting concept or idea we get to writing. Although we’ve found that recently lyrics come to mind whilst working on the music and playing around with different melodies, and we love when that happens cause it makes the whole process so much more dynamic.
SID: As you are now based in London, is there any underrated places you think more people should visit?
Adora: There’s a place in Kentish Town called Pepita Coffee that we discovered through some friends which is really cool. It’s a record and coffee shop that turns into a bar with live dj sets in the evenings, and also has a tiny art gallery in the basement. It’s such a unique place and everyone there is always really nice, so we’d definitely say it’s underrated and worth a visit!
