A Retrospective: Daido Moriyama at the Photographer’s Gallery

Positioned at the intersection of street and conceptual photography, Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama has captivated the art world. The ongoing retrospective exhibition at The Photographer’s Gallery traces the artist's body of work and marks his first retrospective in the UK to date.

The exhibition is divided into two parts: firstly, it charts Daido's evolution from photojournalism to his exploration of the language of photography; secondly, it delves into the interplay between reality and memory. The tension between these two realities is masterfully depicted in Daido's democratic approach to photography. He envisions photography as a medium that should be accessible and widely available to audiences, a vision mirrored in his rare photobooks, featuring his signature grainy, almost banal depictions of street life. In his photography, Daido also explores themes of corruption, surveillance, and issues within Japanese society.

For the first time, this exhibition brings together over 200 works, along with Daido's photobooks and magazines. Be sure not to miss this incredible exhibition in London.
