MM6 Maison Margiela FW22

Steeped in the act of city commuting, the latest collection by MM6 encapsulates the quintessential timelessness of the fashion house. It is replete with elongated cuts, dry wool peacoats, and boomerang-slung sleeves. Just as in real life, the boxy silhouettes are juxtaposed with lug-sole trainers that are a product of the sports label Salomon. Their collaboration marks the guiding force of the collection and reimagines the designs of the fashion house with a dash of utilitarianism.

The utilitarianism spirit also applies to other pieces in the collection. Whether it be denim trucker jackets, derby boots, or cuffs cut from abraded calfskin, the pieces provoke an insatiable desire to wear them in.

The collection is a revivification for MM6 Maison Margiela, it signals a moment to both reflect upon its timeless designs and to welcome them with aplomb. The omnipresence of play and practicality is imbued in the new designs: a leather vest with a studded “SIX” across with the number itself embroidered on a varsity jacket and placed inside an ouroboros symbol, which is the ancient representation of a snake eating its own tail, or more aptly, symbolic of eternality and renewal.

Renewal, invigoration, and symbolism are emphasized, but are at the same time, juxtaposed with playfulness. New iterations of the iconic Japanese bag highlight the underlying playfulness of the new collection. The bag comes in two variations: one, an oval-bottomed tote with knotted handles whereas the other, in an accordion shape in brushed calfskin.

The pieces only come to life when worn, they revel in the ethos at the heart of both the collection and MM6 Maison Margiela.
